Free Search Engine Listings

Is it possible to get in the major search engines without paying fees? The answer is yes to most, but it might take some time and effort.  There are four major search engines that we'll discuss, Google, Yahoo!, MSN, and Ask Jeeves.

There are two ways to get in Google. The least effective way is to submit via their addurl page.  The best way is to get another website to link to yours.  If the website linking to you has high page rank, Google will pick up the link to your site quite quickly.

Yahoo! also has free submit. Yahoo! cautions to expect a delay of several weeks before the site is crawled.  Yahoo! can also find sites by incoming links and offers fast inclusion for a fee. However, this fast fee based inclusion does not imply good search results.

MSN does not currently offer a free submit.  However, MSN will eventually pick up sites that are linked to.

Ask Jeeves also does not have a free submit page but will find sites via links from other sites.

The key to getting free search engine listings is finding quality sites and directories to link to your site.  A free listing in The Open Directory can really speed things along.  If your site is related to search engine optimization or web design, please submit to our SEO directory.

Once you're in the search engine, you're not done yet. You've still got to optimize your site so that the right keywords find you.
