ODP, Open
Directory Project
The ODP, also
referred to as DMOZ, is the
largest human edited directory
on the web. It is constructed
and maintained by a vast,
global community of volunteer
editors. Submission to the
directory is free.
About the Open Directory
Project.
Because it is
free and the editors are
volunteers, there is no
guarantee on submission time. It
really just depends on when a
volunteer gets around to
reviewing a submittal.
ODP
site submission information can
be found here. Many sites
are allowed two listings within
the ODP, one in a topical
category and one in a regional
category. Most sites should not
be deeplinked but there are
exceptions to that rule. It is
best to read the submission
guidelines carefully and submit
to the most specific category
for your site (if you try to
submit higher up a category
tree, it will just delay listing
time as your site is moved down
to the appropriate category for
review). It also is not
good to re-submit, it will
change the submit date on the
site to the new date and if an
editor is reviewing by date
sequence, it will move the site
to the
bottom of the queue. Also,
if an editor sees multiple
inappropriate submissions by the
same person, they may consider
all submissions to be spam.
Sometimes it can
help to politely contact an
editor and ask them to review a
site. However, there are no
guarantees. Editors are
volunteers and are not obliged
to respond to email from
submitters.
Editors at the
Open Directory have created a
public forum for answering
the public's questions about
submissions. This is an
excellent resource to get
information about the ODP but
they will not give information
on individual site status.
