Search Engine and Directory Submissions Overview

This overview is a comparison of submission costs and time to list (if public information).

Altavista - Now a part of Overture, which is part of Yahoo. Altavista no longer has it's own paid submission. It is being replaced by Yahoo Site Match. The free submit is currently turned off.

Altavista receives directory content from The Open Directory Project (ODP) and paid search results from Overture.

AskJeeves -Teoma provides search results for AskJeeves. The ODP provides the directory and Google provides paid results. As of August, 2004, AskJeeves no longer accepts paid submissions.

Google - Google does have paid advertising options (Adwords) but the search engine submission is still free.  Their directory listings come from the Open Directory Project (ODP) which is also a free listing.  A relatively fast way to get in Google, is to obtain an ODP listing. Another method is to obtain links from other visible sites on the internet. More information on obtaining good google listings.

Looksmart - Looksmart has a pay per click model. Non-profit organizations are eligible for free listings through Zeal.

MSN - MSN currently gets search data from Overture, Inktomi, and Looksmart (in the process of moving away from Looksmart).  Microsoft has promised to compete head to head with google. Speculation is that they will have their own search capability in late 2004.

The Open Directory Project - The Open Directory is a free category directory listing.  It feeds the directory listings in Altavista, AOL, Askjeeves, Google, Hotbot, Netscape, Teoma, and many other sites. The directory categories are edited by volunteer human editors and listing times vary accordingly. More information on The Open Directory Project.

Yahoo! - Yahoo Express charges $299/year to be listed in the category directory.   Overture text advertisements are available as PPC (Pay Per Clicks). Overture Site Match is a combination of PFI (Pay for Inclusion) and PPC. Site Match is $49 for the first URL and clicks are $.15 or $.30/click. Site Match only provides frequent spidering, it does not improve search results. More information on Yahoo!
