Yahoo!
On February 18, 2004,
Yahoo! announced that they
have stopped using Google data
in their search results.
As a move to implement their
own search, Yahoo! had
previously purchased search
technology provider Inktomi
and
paid search service provider
Overture. This move
changed the dynamics of the
search industry which had
heavily relied upon Google
results for the last few
years. Google had been serving
more than 50% of all searches
(estimates were as high as
70%). Now Yahoo! will be
taking a big share of searches
and competing directly with
google. Many say that
Yahoo! now has a big edge
because of their portal and
user community.
On March 1, 2004, Yahoo
announced Site Match, a
combination pay for inclusion
and pay per click program.
Suddenly the folks that were
excited about Yahoo competing
with Google changed their
opinion and felt that Yahoo
has made a mistake, similar to
the mistakes of Looksmart.
Yahoo has reiterated
that they will still crawl the
web and that most of their
search results will come from
free listings.
As webmasters, we must now optimize for
Yahoo results that will be
different than Google search
results. Yahoo now has
four methods of getting in
their search results:
 | Site Match - A PFI, pay for
inclusion, and PPC, pay per
click service. PFI fees
are annual and each page on a
site must be paid for to
guarantee spidering. Per
per click fees are $.15 or
$.30 depending on the category
of the site and must be paid
on any click through, relevant
or not. Initial reaction to
this program introduced in
March, 2004 is skepticism by
the webmaster community. |
 | Overture - Overture serves
text advertisements on Yahoo
and other sites. If you
have a competitive keyword and
want to assure visibility, pay
per clicks (PPC) are a way to
get there. |
 | Yahoo Directory - The
Yahoo Directory categorizes
websites with listings that
are edited by human editors.
There is a $299 annual fee for
listing. Is it worth it? At
the moment, the Yahoo
Directory has lost the
prestige and traffic that it
had in the early days of the
Internet. To make matters
worse, the directory is not
utilized in Yahoo search
results. We can only
speculate that Yahoo will fix
this situation. |
 | Organic Listings - If a
website does not participate
in any type of PFI or PPC
programs, will it get listed
in Yahoo? Yes!
Yahoo will find websites that
are not in these programs and
spider them. Afterall,
this is a search engine, and
it needs to have complete
results. If you have
patience and a website with
visibility, it should show up
in Yahoo. |
